단 하나의 질문(The Only One Question) | Ch.1
이 글은 인공지능, 플랫폼, 그리고 이를 뒷받침하는 반도체 비즈니스를 추진하며 얻은 경험과 통찰을 바탕으로 쓴 소설의 첫 장입니다. 기술과 인간의 만남 속에서 제가 마주한 고민과 깨달음을 소설이라는 형식으로 풀어내어 독자에게 질문을 던지고자 했습니다. 독자 여러분과 그 여정을 함께 나누고 싶습니다.
글로벌 투자자들과 전문가들이 “무엇을 하려고 하나요?” 하고 단도직입적으로 물었다.
“’인생 경로’를 따라 살면서 누구나 반드시 마주해야 하는 ‘단 하나의 질문’을 찾도록 합니다. 그 질문은 일정한 조건들을 충족해야만이 그러한 ‘단 하나의 질문’으로서 인정받게 됩니다.”
이에 대해 그들은 “왜 그게 필요하지요? 설사 그것의 필요성이 어느 정도 인정된다손 치더라도 돈이 된다는 것을 보여줄 수 있나요?” 하고 반사적으로 물었다.
그리고 곧바로 이어서 “굳이 그런 질문을 마주하지 않고서도, 이 세상에는 돈을 많이 벌고, 좋은 음식을 먹으면서, 재미있게 시간을 보내는 사람들이 많지 않은가요?”라고 추가적으로 질문을 던졌다.
그들의 질문들을 받고서는, 일반적으로 대부분의 사람들이 과정보다는 최종 결과가 어떠한지에 대해 관심이 더 많다는 점을 고려해서, “만약 어떤 일(사업) 거리가 있는데, 이것으로 돈도 벌게 되고, 사회적 가치도 창출하게 되고, 정서적으로 더 큰 기쁨을 누리게 된다면, 어떻게 될까요? 이런 유형의 사업을 하는 사람들과, 단순히 돈을 많이 벌고, 배불리 먹고, 재미있게 시간을 보내는 사람들 간에는 어떠한 차이가 있을까요?”라고 반문했다.
그러자마자 지금까지의 짧은 대화에 귀를 기울여 듣고 계시던, 연세가 좀 들어 보이시던 분이 “세상에 그런 일(사업) 거리가 있다는 말인가요? 그것으로 그런 것들이 가능하다면 금상첨화(錦上添花)이지요. 그게 가능하다면 세상에 뭐가 부러울 게 있을까 하는 생각이 듭니다”라고 즉답을 하셨다.
“물론 가능합니다. 오늘 주어진 짧은 시간으로는 자세히 설명드릴 수 없어, 요약해서 말씀드리자면, 그러한 ‘단 하나의 질문’이 창조하는 세계로 그걸 가능하게 합니다. 결과적으로 그러한 질문을 마주하지 않는다면, 그러한 게 불가능하다는 이야기입니다”라고 했다.
연세가 좀 드신 분의 질문과 그것에 대한 대답은, 일단 다른 사람들의 관심을 끄는데, 그리고 흥미를 불러일으키는데 어느 정도 일조를 했다.
그렇게 짧은 만남을 마무리 짓고 떠나려는 순간, 바로 그 연세가 좀 드신 분께서 다가오셔서 악수를 청하시면서 “오늘 수고 많으셨습니다. 언제 시간 되면, 오늘 못다 한 이야기를 좀 더 듣고 싶군요”라고 하셨다.
“네, 그럴 기회가 있기를 바랍니다” 하면서 악수를 했다. 그러고 나서 “이렇게 ‘단 하나의 질문’이 또 다른 만남을 가능하게 하는가 봅니다”라고 하면서 미소를 지었다.
하지만, 그러한 짧은 공식적인 만남에서 정작 해주고 싶은 말은 제대로 해주지 못한 채 자리를 떠났다.
“왜 그러한 ‘단 하나의 질문’을 마주해야 하는가?”에 대해, “무엇보다도 그건, 다양한 존재들과의 폭넓은, 깊은 만남을 가능하게 하기 때문입니다”라고 속 시원하게 말을 하지 못한 채 말이다.
만약 그랬다면, 그들은 다시 물었을 것이다. “도대체 그게 가능하거나 한가요? 그게 내 삶과, 일과, 사업과, 이 세상 일과는 무슨 상관이 있는가요? 그러한 만남의 결과 내지는 얻게 되는 성과는 무엇인가요?” 더 현실적인 표현으로는, “그게 돈이 되는가요?”라고 했을 것이다. 이처럼 그러한 말들조차도 결과적으로는 아무런 도움이 되지 않았을 것이다.
‘단 하나의 질문’이 창조하는 세계와 삶을 경험하고픈 때가 그들에게 이르렀다면, 그러한 말들이 조금이라도 도움이 될 수 있었겠지만…… 그제야 ‘인생 경로’를 따라 살면서 누구나 반드시 마주해야 하는 ‘단 하나의 질문’을 찾게 되고…… 그제야 상상하게 되고, 생각하게 되고, 느끼게 되리라…….

The Only One Question | Ch.1
Global investors and experts asked me point-blank, “What are you trying to do?”
I responded, “I help people find the ‘Only One Question’ they must inevitably face on their life’s journey. This question is only recognized as the ‘Only One Question’ if it meets certain conditions.”
They shot back, “Why is that necessary? Even if its necessity is acknowledged, can you show us that it makes money?” And immediately followed up, “Aren’t there many people in this world who make a lot of money, eat good food, and enjoy life without ever facing such a question?”
Considering that most people are more interested in the final outcome than the process, I countered, “What if there were a business that not only makes money, but also creates social value and brings deeper fulfillment? How would that differ from people who only pursue money and pleasure?”
An older gentleman who had been listening intently remarked, “Are you saying such a business exists? If it can do all that, it would be the icing on the cake. If that’s possible, I can’t imagine anything left to envy in life.”
I affirmed, “Yes, it’s certainly possible. I can’t explain it all in this short time, but to put it simply, it’s made possible by the world that the ‘Only One Question’ creates. If you never face that question, that kind of life is impossible.”
The older gentleman’s question and my answer helped, at least to some extent, to draw the attention of the others and spark their curiosity.
As I was leaving, the gentleman came up, shook my hand, and said, “It was great meeting you today. I’d like to hear more about what we couldn’t cover.”
“Yes, I hope we’ll have that opportunity,” I said as we shook hands. Then, with a smile, I added, “It seems the ‘Only One Question’ makes another encounter possible.”
But I left without saying what I truly wanted: “Why must one face the ‘Only One Question’? Most of all, it opens the door to deep, meaningful encounters with others.”
If I had said that, they would have asked again: “Is that even possible? What does that have to do with my life, my work, my business, or the affairs of this world? What is the outcome or benefit of such encounters?”
And in more practical terms, they would have said, “Does that make money?”
In the end, even such words would have been of no help.
If the time had come for them to experience the world and life created by the ‘Only One Question’, then perhaps those words might have helped a little… Only then would they discover the ‘Only One Question’ that everyone must face on their life’s journey… Only then would they begin to imagine, to think, and to feel…
